Just feel the extraordinary…
This journey is dedicated to the discovery of the Galapagos Islands, UNESCO World Heritage, while appreciating the colonial heritage of Ecuador’s capital, Quito, and glimpsing at the indigenous side of the country at the famous Otavalo market. From the natural splendor of the Galapagos Islands to the colonial magnificence of Quito, this itinerary will impact you visually with breathtaking natural beauty and architectural treasures.
This journey will begin and end in Quito. You will discover its colonial heart, the best-preserved and least altered historic center in Latin America. The monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo, and the Church and Jesuit College of La Compañía, with their rich interiors, are pure examples of the 'Baroque school of Quito', which is a fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art. In Quito, you will also enjoy panoramic views of the city and the 14 peaks of the Volcanoes Avenue, thanks to a ride in the “Teleferico” that reaches the summit of Cruz Loma. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Equator Line Monument, a gold line that represents the Equator and over which you can stand with one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern hemisphere. Your visit of Quito will be enhanced by a stay in a 5* hotel.
From Quito you will fly to the Galapagos (Baltra airport), from where you will start your cruise to the different islands, on board of the intimate sailboat Angelique. These 19 islands and the surrounding marine reserve have been called a unique ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. Located at the confluence of three ocean currents, the Galápagos are a ‘melting pot’ of marine species. During your cruise, you will have the time to explore many of the Galapagos Islands and discover their unusual wildlife (birds, land iguana, giant turtles etc.) that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection following his visit in 1835. You will even have the opportunity to snorkel with sea lions.
After returning to Quito from the Galapagos, you will visit the Indian handicrafts market in Otavalo, famous for its wool weavings, as well as the villages of Cotacachi (known for its leather work) and Pechuge. In this Andean area, north of Quito, you will also appreciate amazing natural scenery with snow-capped mountains and volcanoes. You will leave for your international departure the following day.
“Haute couture” journey: Day by Day
